Possession Now Going to DVD? Source:ShockTillYouDrop.com,Yari Film Group January 13, 2009
More bad news for the Sarah Michelle Gellar supernatural thriller Possession. Attached to a screener of an upcoming Fox Home Entertainment DVD release, I caught a trailer for the film which was followed by "Coming soon to DVD." Confusing, as Possession was expected to hit theaters later this month from Yari Film Group.
But according to Whitney Rosenthal, director of interactive marketing: "Possession will not be released in January 2009, like previously stated. Due to financial difficulty, the film will be released later this year, sometime possibly in late February or March 2009."
This begs the question: What's a trailer doing on a Fox/MGM disc? Further, why is it being promoted as coming to DVD soon? Perhaps the answer will not be delayed like this film's release has (we're going well over a year now).
In the film directed by Joel Bergvall and Simon Sandquist, Gellar co-stars alongside Lee Pace and Michael Landes as a woman whose husband and brother-in-law are caught in a traffic accident. The brother-in-law wakes up and he's soon acting like Gellar's hubby. Creepiness ensues.

IMDB has put up a straight to DVD release date for this movie: March 13, 2009....that isn't too bad, if it's true.

“Possession” Movie may never be released...
The production company Yari Film Group (YFG) filed for bankruptcy. A few months ago. So there is no telling when Possession movie will actually be released on DVD, or if it will be released at all.
The Accidental Husband, which I believe did have a world wide theatrical release, and it had Uma Thurman, Jeffery Dean Morgan, and Colin Firth. It took that movie a little over a year for that film to be released on DVD.
“Nothing but the Truth and What Doesn’t Kill You are two small-ish movies making a go for it in a crowded awards season, but they’re about to lose some much-needed help from the studio that made them. Yari Film Group has filed for involuntary bankruptcy, after four groups owed money by the studio took action against them.
The Hollywood Reporter announced the news on Friday, adding that Yari is disputing the debts and claims the general credit crisis is what brought about their troubles. Layoffs will commence immediately at the studio, though there’s no telling how many will be taking place.
Two of its movies still in production, Joe Carnahan’s Killing Pablo and the Jennifer Lopez vehicle The Governess, are still moving forward, But Yari, one of the few independent studios not shielded by a larger studio, is surely in big trouble, and may not be part of the film distribution scene much longer. But it’s hard to know how something this big will pan out, especially with the economy in the state it’s in. They may wind up capable of reorganizing their debt and getting back in the game, and I guess in the meantime they don’t need random film journalists criticizing them. So fine ! I’ll leave them alone.
