It was perhaps inevitable that Heathers would return in some form. The 1989 film remains a cult classic and every once in awhile, star Winona Ryder and writer Daniel Waters have mentioned the possibility of a sequel. More recently, there has been development on a stage musical version, possibly starring Kristen Bell.
Now however, Variety reports that Heathers is being developed as a TV series. The project is set up at FOX with Sony Pictures TV and Lakeshore Entertainment (who hold the rights to Heathers) producing.
Mark Rizzo is writing the pilot, assisted by Men in Trees creator Jenny Bicks, whose credits also include Sex and the City Variety says Rizzo is still working on his take on updating the story, but that the characters from the movie will be a part of it, including Veronica Sawyer (played by Ryder in the film) and Christian Slater’s Jason “J.D.” Dean.
Lakeshore’s President Gary Luccchesi tells Variety, “We had the title, and talked about doing a film remake at times. But doing it for TV seemed like a fresh and original idea.”
The question is, how do you adapt Heathers for network TV? The original film, an extremely dark comedy, involved JD and Veronica beginning to murder their high school’s bullies and making it look like suicides – including the title characters, a group of like-named girls who are worshiped and feared by the other students. It is highly questionable that content of this sort could be part of a weekly network series, so what exactly would be the angle of an ongoing Heathers TV show?
